(#119-01/16/00) A Review of Selected Websites
Over the past year the US government has invested a substantial
amount of money in developing user-friendly websites. In the field of
US Immigration there are many excellent websites that are worth checking
out. These sites and other useful sites can be found on the LINK page
of this website.
US IMMIGRATION
AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE The INS is the federal agency responsible for enforcing the immigration
laws in the United States. Its website was recently updated. You will
find answers to many of your basic questions, US Immigration forms, and
special program information such as the green card replacement program
and INSPASS. There is also a "How Do I . . .?" section that
is very useful in assisting people in finding information on the website.

THE NATIONAL
VISA CENTER The National Visa Center processes all approved green card visa petitions after the INS approves them and retains them until the "priority date" is current. This can sometimes take several years. Answers questions such as what to do if you move, the person sponsoring you becomes a US citizen, what the current priority date is for each category, etc.
THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY: TOKYO, JAPAN The US Embassy in Tokyo issues nonimmigrant visas (F, E, L, H, etc.) and schedules green card interviews for people in Japan. The site answers questions such as what to do if you lose your US passport or green card while in Japan, how to report a birth, marriage, or divorce, how to apply for a green card or nonimmigrant visa, etc.
US SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM Almost all US citizens, male aliens who are living in the US illegally, and male aliens with green cards, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. Applicants for naturalization must prove that they have good moral character. The INS views failure to register with selective service as grounds to deny a naturalization application on the grounds of bad moral character. To find out whether you have registered, to change your address, and to register on- line check out this site.
